The Big Easy ~ New Orleans, Louisiana

Nawlins!

The Schexnayders and Momo Monkey were kind enough to take me New Orleans. I never made the trip when I lived in Memphis, and since we were so close (in Baton Rouge) we took a day trip to experience the city.

Sonic and all of the pellet ice goodness for breakfast! Why we only have one in Southern California I'll never understand....

The Superdome. It's something to think that it served as shelter to thousands of Hurricane Katrina victims.

So much to do, so little time...

A weekend of snapping pics, and I finally get one of little man crackin' a smile!

This is Miss Hannah with Mason Jude. They are cousins and Hannah is so sweet and patient with Mason.

They had fun running everywhere and showing us their tricks in the performance pavilion. I showed off a few time steps, flap-ball-change, shuffle-step and a wing or two. I didn't realize I still had it in me! All of those tap lessons are still ingrained in my brain!

This is the way to see the sites!

Shopping galore inside the French Market. I found a must have St. Jude medallion and a New Orleans fleur-de-lis charm.

Who needs a double stroller? There's plenty of room in there!

I just had to try beignets! When I told people that I was New Orleans bound everyone told me to head to Cafe du Monde!

"Donuts without the hole..." lavishly covered in powdered sugar and oh so yummy!

These painted trolley cars are all over the city. At first glance I thought that they looked like coffins and found it a bit odd... Does anybody else see the resemblance?

The St. Louis Cathedral was amazing! It was built in 1720 and overlooks Jackson Square. It is the oldest Catholic Cathedral, "in constant use," in the United States.

Momo Monkey lit a candle for Angel Zoie and Mason was very interested in the explanation. I love the way he will grow up knowing what an amazing big sister he has.

A family serenading us with violins ~ with a donation box for Summer Camp.

It may seem like an awkward transition, but from the Cathedral we headed to Bourbon Street. For a Photo opp only! :O)

Bourbon Street reminds me a lot of Memphis' Beale Street. I don't think I'll be making any Mardi Gras reservations anytime soon!

How funny is this granny? She really was jammin' on the keyboard!

A trolley along the Mighty Muddy Mississippi River.

Our last stop before heading back to Lafayette was to The International Shrine of St. Jude at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. This statue of St. Jude is the world's largest. My interest in St. Jude began as I learned of the significance it had to Danny Thomas and his founding St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

We spent time in The Lourdes Grotto. Very serene and spiritual.

The chapel was completed in 1827 and was, "born of hope in the face of desperation." At the time New Orleans was stricken with hundreds of cases of Yellow Fever. It was the place where many veterans of the Confederate Army and survivors of the American Civil war gathered to worship and, "nourish their souls."

Good-bye New Orleans!

We headed back to Lafayette and dodged a massive thunderstorm.

Tomorrow, I head back home. I had such a fun filled extended weekend with my favorite crazy Louisiana family. Many thanks to The Schexnayders and Momo Monkey for all of your hospitality and for making my trip a memorable one! In the words of precious princess Angel Zoie, I LOVE YOU BIG LIKE HEAVEN!!!!

A few of my Memphis Peeps!

Today after an exciting and productive Donor Appreciation Luncheon for work, I met up with, "My two Moms," Jill and Mary. We shared a meal at Houston's and caught up on the last several months of life. When I was a Child Life Specialist at St. Jude these women were the ones that I counted on to help me stop the insanity! They were my sounding board, my support, much like surrogate mothers.

I wish that we were better at staying in touch. But life gets busy and we forget to call. Thankfully, we always seem to be able to pick up where we left off. We can laugh about our never ending quest to lose weight and get in shape and they freely impart their wisdom to me about, "not settling," and making the most of my 30's. We all need people whose faces light up when we walk in the room.

Mary D. and I share the same birthday, just 20 years a part. And Jill, well, she rounds out our three muskateerism.

After dinner I stopped by to visit with an old friend and coworker, Clare. We worked as Child Life Specialists and now she is a mom to an adorable 2 year old son, Jack.

I FINALLY got to see my friend Dana and his wife, Flavia. I got the hint when I listened to Dana's voicemail message, "I guess that you are just too busy to see us" subtlety. They live in the cutest house in the Evergreen Historic District. I saw it when they first bought it, and were in the throws of a massive remodel. It looks awesome now and I'm very jealous of their renovating skills!

Yea for old friends and making the time to reconnect!

Eva, Penelope and my TTU peeps... I hope to see you next time. There's never enough time! Oh yeah... I do come to Memphis to work!

Vegas Baby

Last week I had a work event in Las Vegas. Two of my coworkers joined me as well as my parents! We worked hard and also had some time to enjoy a bit of Las Vegas.

We even found a MARLO THOMAS slot machine!

I may have lost a few dollars... but I'll never tell!

We stayed at The Mirage on the Vegas strip. (Thank you to cheaphotels.com)

The Revolution Lounge. It brought me back to the days of being obsessed with The Beatles and singing along with Tia and Tysha in High School.

The pool. And no, I did not venture to the Mirage Venue, Bare.

Thursday we ate brunch at the Monte Carlo and then headed to The Wynn and Encore. They are beautiful! I love the interior decor. Butterflies and flowers... fun and whimsical...

Loving the flowers... would make a great quilt pattern.

Las Vegas doesn't appear to be suffering from much from the state of our economy. Everywhere that we went was jam packed with people....

Outside on Wynn patio...

What a group!

Nice bruise on my arm, eh? That was from the icky scary blood vampire blood draw-er last week.

Mariposas bonitas...

We visited the Guardian Angel Cathedral, in search of a stained glass window, donated by The Danny Thomas Family.

We didn't think that the doors would be open... but they were and we went inside...

And we found it!

The inside of the Cathedral was gorgeous!

My parents and I outside of The Wynn.

We saw Le Reve. It was PHENOMENAL and worth every penny. I'm hooked and want to see every Cirque du Soleil show!

Before the show...

Leslie loved it too!

Gelato cones at The Venetian.

Thanking all of the St. Jude Supporters!

My mom and dad came to help and it was so great to have them!

Jim, Leslie and I at the hotel... our work here is done!

Our next stop was Lake Las Vegas.

The gardens in The Lake Las Vegas Ritz Carlton. A girl can dream...

And on to the new M Casino and Resort. It just opened this week and everybody and their brother was their to check it out!

We ate dinner at Studio B. They have over 200 dishes and chefs prepare delicious appetizers, entrees and out-of-this-world patisserie desserts. There was a 2 1/2 hour wait...but...somehow I, "made friends," with a man and his wife in the VIP line and they added us to their party. Sweet!

Salmon cooked on bamboo

And on Saturday morning I was homeward bound; leaving Las Vegas.
Until next time...
