Deja Vu ~ Chapman University's Spring Dance Concert

Back in my Christine's Dance Studio Days, our annual dance recital was at Chapman. I thought I was pretty hot stuff doing my I Feel Pretty and Love Shack numbers on a real stage in front of a real (even if just family) audience.
I've been intentionally seeking out local opportunities to see the arts. I did a google search last week for shows in Orange County and was pleasantly surprised to not be too late to catch Chapman's end of the year Spring Dance Concert.
I recruited my friend Z. to meet me there. I talked it up by saying, "I know it's going to be phenomenal. You know you want to go. I'll go alone if I have to... but..."

Neither of us were disappointed. Such talent! The program was all choreographed by (I hear) Seniors in the Dance program and danced by Dance majors. It was very impressive. I signed up to hear about future shows. I want to take advantage of seeing their music shows too. Ten bucks? Way better (and hard to believe cheaper) than catching a movie.

Chapman's campus is beautiful. These fountains have a column which reads, "Intellectual. On the highway of life make the flame of wisdom your guiding lamp. The comfort of confidence, your constant companion." Deep stuff...

An afternoon of Great Expectations courtesy of Santa Ana College Theatre Department

I feel a little bit guilty that I don't take advantage of local theatre productions more often. Southern California has a plethora of community, college and even Preforming Arts High School's that all put out some pretty great productions.

Growing up, my parents exposed me to a lot of music and theatre. They supported my love of the stage by enrolling me in theatre, dance, voice and piano lessons at a young age. They schlepped me to and from my lessons and rehearsals and patiently sat through many recitals and performances. My mother was insistent that I study piano and I played from Kindergarten - high school graduation. I despised practicing and was never a model student. As soon as I hit college I, "retired," and it isn't until very recent that I've started to tickle the ivorys a bit. All of those years of lessons was money well spent as I have an appreciation for music and being classically trained has served me well.

I sang and danced for 15 years and was far from being the star of any show, and was never destined to be Juilliard material. But I enjoyed the camraderie I found singing and dancing and the feeling I got expressing myself through song and dance.

We saw many theatre productions from both community theatres and touring Broadway productions. Some of my fondness memories include driving to Portland from our tiny Central Oregon town to see a Broadway Musical. We were lucky to have season tickets and several times a year we made a weekend of it. We'd buy the soundtrack ahead of time and learn the songs and then belt out the choruses as we traveled. I still love the theatre and wish that I would go more.

Last month, Eric, a mutual friend of Ziad and I starred in Santa Ana College's production of Great Expectations. He played as the prisoner and was fantastic!

"Charles Dickens’ literary masterpiece comes to the Phillips Hall stage with a rich and exciting retelling of the famous classic. The timeless story of Pip’s journey from young lad to adult is artfully conveyed. Meet the beloved people that inhabit Pip’s life story, as he comes of age as a compassionate and admirable human being, truly reaching his “great expectations”.
Pathetically, I've never read Charles Dickens. At least I don't remember reading his works. And now, I will!

Ziad and I

Zee and Eric. They are old friends and have been in several bands together. Their gifts are revealed when they are on stage and behind a microphone. They're naturals!

If you live in Southern California check out Santa Ana's Theatre Department Productions. They have a fantastic program and I look forward to seeing many more of their productions!

Four Seasons with Z and a trip to The Huntington Gardens

Ziad and I had our first date 10/29/07. He picked me up from the Aliso Viejo Library. I was there doing research for my Thesis. A few months later we met a couple at the Hotel Laguna. They were newly married and offered some unsolicited advice to us. They said, "Make sure you go through all four seasons together before you decide to make a life together." That became an inside joke between us and we would say, "four seasons" whenever we heard of anybody jumping into marriage.
Today marks experiencing the four seasons together. And although we know that we really love and care about each other... we've decided to remain in each other's lives as friends. So there you have it... it's on the table and we can move on with the great pics of today!

Ziad has been talking about The Huntington Botantical Gardens forever. The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens is a collections-based research and educational institution established in 1919 by Henry E. and Arabella Huntington. Henry Huntington, a key figure in the development of Southern California in the early 20th century, was also an active collector of rare books and manuscripts, art, and plants. By the time he established the institution, he and his wife had amassed an extensive collection focusing on British and American history, literature, and art, as well as rare and spectacular plant specimens.

Here I am at the Lilly Ponds. If looks like I am sweating, I am. Who expected 90 degree weather when it's almost November. Some parts of the country (Hello, Philadelphia!) have had cold cold cold conditions already!

This is the tallest Bamboo I've ever seen! I'm trying to grow some in my house and it never gets past 18 inches or so.

This is on the patio. A nice place to sit and relax, eh?

This is Blue Boy by Gainsborough. It was purchased by Mr. Huntington for $700,000 in the 1920's to add to his growing collection

The gardens are amazing! The 206-acre estate comprises fifteen specialized gardens filled with 20,000 different kinds of plants, with as many as 1,800 rose species and cultivars, 1,200 camellia cultivars, and 5,000 cacti and succulents. Themed gardens are devoted to roses, camellias, subtropical, Australian, and jungle plants, as well as palms, bamboo, and water lilies. Especially popular with visitors are the desert and Japanese gardens.

In the Rainforest Exhibit

There is a special Children's Garden that is especially designed for the pint sized patrons

A difficult attraction for those over 3 feet tall!

I'm ready to go back to Asia!

So if you're ever in the San Marino / Pasadena area, you've got to make a trip to the Huntington!

Melie and Z and Universal Studios

Ziad scored 2 tickets to Universal Studios, Hollywood. So with warm weather (90 degrees today) and a quiet afternoon, we headed to Universal City.

Universal City Walk

I did not eat one ~ what else can you do to twinkies? Fried and the fair and covered in chocolate... what comes next?

Why didn't I think of this?

We felt a bit like tourists...

I rode the new Simpsons Ride. Ziad opted out. It was awesome. Definitely not for one prone to motion sickness!
